Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry is not just a school of thought. It’s a school of action. As part of its commitment to make homelessness rare, brief and a one-time occurrence, we are researching the most successful models of faith community engagement on the issue of family homelessness.

Red-arrowIs your faith community ready to participate more fully in the work of ending homelessness? We are here to help you with simple tools to guide you to the model that best fits your community.

We will be updating this page with great new resources – join our update list and follow the blog (by entering your e-mail address and clicking “follow” on the homepage) to receive a message when we post a new tool.

Discernment

Before you introduce a new ministry it’s a good idea to take a step back and assess where you are, what you can build upon and what ministry will most fit the needs of your congregation. There are a couple ways you can go about this step; below we offer a few suggestions. If you need help don’t hesitate to contact us – we are happy to offer suggestions.

Discernment Tool:  This tool offers simple steps you can follow to identify your congregation’s strengths and where you need to grow, giving you the information you need to select the best. You can find the tool here: Assessment Tool for Faith Communities.

Perception Survey : Use a tool like Survey Monkey to create an online survey to poll your congregation about their perceptions and ways they would like to engage in solutions. You can create your own questionnaire or borrow ideas from ours: Sample Perception Survey

 Best Practice Models

1. Homeless to Renter: Moving Families into Housing

The first model we’re showcasing is the successful Homeless to Renter (H2R) Program, a King County partnership between Temple Beth Am and Jewish Family Service that covers move-in costs (e.g. first/last months’ rent and deposit) for homeless families who would otherwise not be able to come up with the funds in order to get into housing.
