  • 250g Flora Plant Original spread
  • 3 cups (660g) caster sugar
  • 1/3 cup (35g) dairy-free cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 3 cups (405g) gluten-free self-raising flour
  • 1 cup (300g) Coles apple sauce
  • 1/2 cup (50g) psyllium husk
  • Mixed berries, to serve


  • Step 1
    Combine the Flora Plant Original, sugar, cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda and 2 cups (500ml) water in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 mins or until the sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high and bring to the boil. Set aside for 20 mins to cool.
  • Step 2
    Preheat oven to 180�C. Grease two 20cm (base measurement) round cake pans and line the bases and sides with baking paper.
  • Step 3
    Whisk flour, apple sauce and psyllium husk into the chocolate mixture in the saucepan. Divide the mixture among the prepared pans. Bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the centres comes out clean. Set aside in pans for 5 mins to cool slightly before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Step 4
    To make chocolate frosting, use an electric mixer to beat Flora Plant Original in a bowl until creamy. Add icing sugar and cocoa powder, in 3 batches, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla and milk until smooth.
  • Step 5
    Place 1 cake on a serving plate. Spread top with 1/2 cup of frosting. Top with remaining cake. Spread top and side of entire cake with remaining frosting. Decorate with berries.
